Sump Pump Reviews: What’s the Best Sump Pump?

Barry Schilling recommends the Zoeller 98 primary sump pump

This series of videos has attempted to educate homeowners and consumers about the major differences in sump pump design and construction and how these factors affect the pump’s performance.  So far, Barry Schilling has discussed:

In this video, Barry puts all his advice together and recommends what he feels is the best primary sump pump for most homeowners, one that’s heavy-duty, powerful and can be counted on to keep your basement dry.

The Best Primary Sump Pump – the Zoeller M98

At U.S. Waterproofing, we‘ve installed tens of thousands of sump pumps (along with thousands of battery back-up pumps) since our founding in 1957.  If we can help you with your sump pump, or any other basement seepage problem, please ask for our advice.  It’s free.

Thank you for this series of videos...what a terrific help! I see the Zoeller 98 on Amazon. Do I need Zoeller 30-0181 Check Valve, 1-1/2 Inch by Zoeller for this pump?
Thank you so much!

Thanks for the praise, Carole. You will need a 1.5" check valve for the Zoeller 98. The Zoeller brand is fine but any brand will work.

My existing pump (model is PJM-AVS-33) connects to 1-1/4 inch PVC pipe. (The pipe is labeled as 1-1/4 inch.)

It appears that the better pumps require 1-1/2 inch discharge pipe.

If a sump pump is listed as 1-1/2 inch discharge is it possible to use it or am I stuck with choosing only pumps that use 1-1/4 inch discharge?

You can use a step-down PVC adapter to connect a pump with a 1 1/2" discharge to a 1 1/4" pipe but you'll cut down the pumping capacity slightly.

How long do pump switches last on a submersible sump? I bought a RIGID Aquapro 1/2 hp and the lifetime warranty states in SMALL print that the switch ($25) must be replaced every 2 yrs. Fact: during the 2nd yr of usage the switch went but I have a water back up system. Do all sumps require the switch to be replaced?

Is there a minimum depth that a sump hole should be below the drain tile pipe? Or does it make a difference? Thanks

Hi Barry. I live in Brooklyn, NY. During the recent Storm Sandy, my basement door caved in from the water pressure outside and filled my basement with 5 ft of water.
Do you have an opinion on Emecole Pumps and Backup Systems. According to their literature their cast iron and stainless steel EmeSump Pumps are equipped with superior travel switches, allowing for longer and more efficient cycles. EmeSump Backup Systems are powered by AGM Batteries and provide the most amount of gallons pumped per minute.
Also, do you know of any companies like yours in the NYC area that you could recommend?
